Command An Army units
Every troop name we can trace to a source, with its reported star cost and battlefield role. Where only one source reports a value, the card says so instead of pretending it is settled.
- Mercenary1 starMeleeThe cheapest frontline body you can field. At one star it is the default filler when the star budget is tight, and it is the one complete evolution chain every creator names: Mercenary to Squire to Knight. Two sourcesEvolves
- Squire2 starMeleeThe middle step of the Mercenary chain. No published table carries its star cost, so this page shows no star value rather than a guess.Single sourceEvolves
- Knight3 starMelee all-rounderThe end of the Mercenary line. Creators describe it as an underrated all-rounder that holds its own against Lancer, Berserker, Samurai and Spartan.Single source
- Shieldman1 starDefenseThe one-star defensive anchor: it takes arrows on its shield and buys your ranged units the time they need. One of the four starter picks, and the base of the Imperial Wall line. Two sourcesEvolves
- Sentinel2 starDefenseThe middle step of the Shieldman chain, and the required stop on the way to Imperial Wall.Single sourceEvolves
- Imperial Wall3 starDefenseThe final form of the shield line and one of the best defensive units creators name: extreme arrow resistance at the cost of the shortest reach in the game, which lets almost anything crowd it.Single source
- Spearman1 starPolearmA one-star polearm that hard-counters cavalry. It is the direct answer to Cavalry and Lancer, and the base of the spear line. Two sourcesEvolves
- Halberdier2 starPolearmKnown as the shield breaker: high damage plus high block damage, which makes it effective against any shield wall and against Spartan stacks. With no archers on the field it is close to unstoppable. Its star cost is disputed - Command Center lists 2 stars, Pro Game Guides lists 1 star in its tier table and 2 stars in its own ranked list - so the in-game value is the authority.Single sourceEvolves
- Imperial Halberdier3 starPolearmThe final evolution of the spear line. Its star cost is unconfirmed: one creator notes the evolved polearm can price itself out of your star limit entirely, so check the real cost before equipping.Single source
- Archer1 starRangedA one-star ranged unit with unusually broad coverage and the first pick among the four starter units. Its line ends at Flaming Archers, whose burn damage still defines the ranged meta. Two sourcesEvolves
- Longbowman2 starRangedThe middle step of the Archer line and the required stop before Flaming Archers.Single sourceEvolves
- Flaming Archers3 starRangedThe only unit in the game with burn damage and the ranged core of the current meta. Community reports put its attack range at 300, down from 405 before it was cut for being too strong. Official and community sources usually write the name in the plural, Flaming Archers, also seen as Flame Archers; this site previously called it Fire Archer.Single source
- Scout Rider2 starCavalryA two-star cavalry unit that creators call one of the best flanking picks: fast to commit, and able to swing behind the line to cut down archers and commanders. Two sourcesEvolves
- Lancer4 starCavalryThe end of the cavalry line and the only four-star unit community sources say you can reach purely by evolving. A charge unit built to kill archers and Flaming Archers.Single source
- Crossbowman3 starRangedA three-star ranged unit with a good matchup against high-value melee, which melts the instant cavalry or Flaming Archers reach it.Two sources
- Immortal4 starSpecial meleeA four-star special melee unit. High durability and built for frontal pushes, and recommended for fast-paced play and for clearing mixed groups of NPCs and shields. Two sources
- Spartan4 starSpecial meleeA four-star spear elite and the core of any defence. With circle formation up it is very hard for conventional units to break, which makes it the most targeted unit in the game and the one that most tests your loadout. Two sources
- Samurai4 starSpecial meleeA four-star special melee unit and the highest-DPS unit in community consensus, summoning 16 soldiers at once. It breaks shield lines and pressures cavalry, but its health is low and concentrated ranged fire collapses it.Two sources
- Berserker4 starSpecial meleeA four-star high-DPS melee unit that community sources rate as the weakest four-star: extremely fragile against ranged damage, and unable to handle a Spartan head-on.Two sources
- Spear Militia2 starPolearmThe basic spear militia, summoning 30 soldiers at once and applying pressure through sheer numbers. It is the base of the Spear Vanguard line.Single sourceEvolves
- Spear Vanguard3 starPolearmThe evolved form of the spear militia: faster than Imperial Wall with longer reach, but less block. Creators list it among the evolutions most worth the cost.Single source
- Cavalryman3 starCavalryThe middle step of the Scout Rider line and the required stop before Lancer. A stronger charge and more survivability, at the cost of going from two stars to three. Two sourcesEvolves
- Pikeman2 starPolearmThe evolved Spearman, with a stronger anti-charge profile and the only second step on the main spear line. The 2026-09-19 balance pass raised spear squad size from 24 to 28.Two sources
- Javelineer2 starRangedA javelin thrower whose official card lists RNG 140 at level 1. After the 2026-09-13 rework its throws ignore shield damage reduction, which turned it into the anti-shield ranged unit. Two sources dispute its star cost (2 stars and 1 star), so the in-game value is the authority. Two sourcesEvolves
- Elite Javelineer3 starRangedThe evolved Javelineer and the end of the anti-shield ranged line. At three stars it is hard to fit alongside your main units on a mid-range star limit. Two sources
- Mace3 starMeleeA break-shield melee unit with officially confirmed block damage, and one of the standard answers to a Spartan formation or a shield line. It has no evolution line, so investment only comes through ascension. Two sources
- Rapier? starMeleeA rapier unit added in Update 2 (2026-09-19) with an officially confirmed Parry trait. The 2026-09-21 patch cut its ATK INT from 1.1 to 0.9. The developer has published neither a star cost nor a summon rate, so this page shows no numbers rather than a guess.Single source
- Rapier Knight? starMeleeThe second rapier unit from Update 2. The 2026-09-21 patch raised Parry from 20% to 30% while cutting ATK INT from 1.1 to 0.9, trading damage for block rate. Star rating and full stats remain unpublished.Single source
Reading a unit card
Each card shows four things worth checking in order. The star cost decides whether the unit fits your budget at all. The role tells you which job it fills in a four-slot army. The confidence badge tells you how much to trust the two numbers beside it, with two sources meaning independent agreement and single source meaning one creator said it. And the evolves flag tells you whether there is anything to invest duplicates into, because a cheap unit with a strong evolution is a far better long-term pick than a cheap unit without one.
How we label unit data
Star costs and roles in this database are community-reported, which means two or more independent sources agree on them. Anything reported by a single creator is marked as a single source and treated as unconfirmed, and anything with no source at all simply does not appear. That is why the roster here splits into two lists rather than pretending to be complete: it is better to show a gap than to fill it with a number somebody invented.
Two practical notes follow from that. First, star costs change with evolution, and most evolved forms have no reported cost yet, so a unit that fits your budget today may not fit it after you evolve it. Second, the game is patched weekly: if a value here disagrees with your own Units menu, your menu is correct and the page is stale. Both facts are the reason the army builder lets you edit every cost rather than trusting the defaults.
Named by creators, not yet costed
These troops appear in gameplay footage and in the counter discussions, but no source reports a star cost for them. They are excluded from the army builder pool until a value can be traced.
- CrossbowAppears only in the official 2026-09-13 patch notes. No unit list carries an entry for it, and neither its role nor its star cost is confirmed.
- MortarA ranged suppression unit, suggested as the ranged answer when cavalry is not an option; its range sits below Imperial Wall.
- ShielderA shield-type unit named in play, appearing alongside Halberdier.
- HammerA unit category that counters shields, and also the name of a commander class.
What are the best units in Command An Army?
There is no single best unit in Command An Army, and any list that names one is answering a different question. Your army is limited by star cost and by four equipment slots, so the best units in Command An Army for your account are the strongest four that fit the budget you actually have. A unit that is excellent at 15 stars is useless to a player capped at 8, and a cheap unit with a strong evolution often beats an expensive one that never evolves.
That is why the Command An Army units list above is sorted by star cost rather than by strength. Use it to see what each troop costs and which role it fills, then take your star limit to thearmy builderto get an actual answer for your budget, including the second and third best combinations and the reason each one is ranked where it is.
